Tancredo jumps the shark.
“People have to understand what we’re talking about here. The president of the United States is an internationalist,” said Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo. “He is going to do what he can to create a place where the idea of America is just that – it’s an idea. It’s not an actual place defined by borders. I mean this is where this guy is really going.”
Tancredo lashed out at the White House’s lack of action in securing U.S. borders, and said efforts to merge the U.S. with both Mexico and Canada is not a fantasy.
“I know this is dramatic – or maybe somebody would say overly dramatic – but I’m telling you, that everything I see leads me to believe that this whole idea of the North American Union, it’s not something that just is written about by right-wing fringe kooks. It is something in the head of the president of the United States, the president of Mexico, I think the prime minister of Canada buys into it…”
(Sigh). Well up till I read that one I was ready to join the "Tancredo for President" campaign. Damn, aren't there any strongly conservative politicians who don't have a few screws loose? Seems everytime one comes along he manages to join the moonbats just when he should be picking up steam. Phooey.
My problems with GW Bush include his abysmal record on immigration but I don't believe the man is planning a North American Union. He's too pro business and so wants cheap labor, that's bad enough yet still a far cry from this particular conspiracy theory. While we're on this topic, anyone who voted for him in 2000 should have known he was with the open-borders crowd. Down here in Texas it was common knowledge, we knew it from his time as governor. But that was pre 9/11/01. The world looked a lot different then.
Do I think he's in the pocket of Vicente Fox? Not stinking likely! Hey, down in Mexico Fox is accused of kowtowing to Bush. Go figure.
Even if he was pushing for a North American Union how would he make it happen? He'll end his final term as President in 2008. Anything he may have done can be negated PDQ by his successor. And with less than two years left in office he's seriously behind the curve in getting things done.
Conspiracy theories, ya gotta love 'em.

To give Tancredo his due, he is right about one aspect of Bush's "One Big Country" plan.
He would like to see the standard of living for working people in this country decreased to what he sees as a "sustainable" level. You can already see it happening. The introduction of large numbers of undocumented workers is simply a strategy to accomplish this.
We will remain a separate country, but it may be a very different one, very soon.
