Planned Parenthood & mammograms...

Found this at Lifenews.com, gotta love those folks at Live Action, they're becoming a real pain in the ass for Planned Parenthood.

Calls Confirm Planned Parenthood Misleads on Offering Mammograms
by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com

The pro-life organization responsible for recent videos showing Planned Parenthood offering abortions to alleged sex traffickers who prey on women finds the abortion business is misleading about mammograms

As LifeNews.com reported in February, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards joined the talk show of pro-abortion activist Joy Behar and defended Planned Parenthood against legislation in Congress seeking to revoke its federal taxpayer funding.

“If this bill ever becomes law, millions of women in this country are going to lose their health care access, not to abortion services, to basic family planning – you know, mammograms,” she claimed.

Previously, LifeNews.com and pro-life blogger Jill Stanek followed up with phone calls to various Planned Parenthood centers and confirmed they do not do mammograms.

Today, Live Action released videotaped footage of calls to 30 Planned Parenthood centers nationwide in 27 different states where abortion facility staff were asked whether or not mammograms could be performed on site. Every one of the Planned Parenthood centers admitted they could not do mammograms. Every Planned Parenthood, without exception, tells the women calling that they will have to go elsewhere for a mammogram, and many clinics admit that no Planned Parenthood clinics provide this breast cancer screening procedure.

“We don’t provide those services whatsoever,” admits a staffer at Planned Parenthood of Arizona while a staffer at Planned Parenthood’s Comprehensive Health Center clinic in Overland Park, Kansas tells a caller, “We actually don’t have a, um, mammogram machine, at our clinics.”

Live Action president Lila Rose says the new recordings further confirm Planned Parenthood’s corruption.

“Planned Parenthood is first and foremost an abortion business, but Planned Parenthood and its allies will say almost anything to try and cover up that fact and preserve its taxpayer funding,” she told LifeNews.com. “It’s not surprising that an organization found concealing statutory rape and helping child sex traffickers would misrepresent its own services so brazenly, playing on women’s fears in order to protect their tax dollars.”

Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood director in Texas, also condemned Planned Parenthood’s misleading statements on mammograms.

“For so long PP has touted that they are a provider of mammogram services,” she said. “This is just one of the lies that Planned Parenthood uses to draw people into their clinics. PP is not able to provide quality services on their own, so they are forced to lie to the public about services they don’t provide–and mammograms are just one of those services.”

Both Rose and Johnson call on Congress to revoke all taxpayer subsidies from Planned Parenthood. In the last reported year, Planned Parenthood received $363 million in government money.

Update: Planned Parenthood is hitting back, according to a statement sent to CBN national correspondent David Brody from Stuart Schear, Vice President for Communications of Planned Parenthood.

“Live Action has a documented history of twisting facts to suit its extreme political agenda, and this video is just the latest example of a false charge.

“Planned Parenthood provides a wide range of preventive health care services to millions of women through its 800 health centers including contraception, Pap tests, annual exams, HIV and other STI tests, and lifesaving breast exams.

“Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses provide more than 800,000 breast cancer screenings annually. We offer breast exams at every one of our family planning health centers. Like the vast majority of primary care physicians and ob-gyns, we refer our patients to other facilities for mammograms when indicated based on a breast exam, age or family history.”

U.S. Priest under fire for promoting Church teaching...

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, March 29, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Catholic priest has come under fire from homosexual activists for “anti-gay indoctrination” after he taught his students what the Catholic Church teaches about homosexuality in his high school course on gay “marriage.”

Equality Matters, a media and communications group for homosexual rights, on their website accused the chaplain of Indianapolis’ Cardinal Ritter High School of “spouting a stream of homophobic and offensive falsehoods about same-sex marriage and gay people in general to a classroom full of students.”

Fr. John Hollowell, chaplain and teacher at the private Catholic high school, had posted the videos of the lectures on YouTube and his personal blog last week.

In the lectures he explains Catholic teaching on homosexuality. However, his presentation was denounced as “anti-gay lecturing” by the media watchdog group, who said that the priest “calls homosexual acts ‘an abomination’, advocates for ex-gay therapy, and rails against same-sex adoption and marriage by comparing homosexuality to alcoholism and prostitution.”

The priest is currently in Rome and says he won’t be able to respond to the accusations until his return.

In the videos, however, Fr. Hollowell is seen challenging his students to think about and discuss the “difficult” issues of homosexuality and homosexual “marriage.”

He points out that the Bible, in Leviticus 20:13 and other places in the New Testament, calls “homosexual acts” an “abomination.” “You have two options,” he says, “God is cool with homosexuality, homosexual acts, I should say … or what the Bible and the Church say about it is correct … There’s no middle ground on that issue.”

The priest refers to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the official book of the teachings of the Church, which states that homosexuals “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity,” and condemns any form of “unjust discrimination” against them.

However, the Catechism also states that homosexual inclinations are “objectively disordered” and homosexual acts are “acts of grave depravity.” “Under no circumstances can they be approved,” it says, explaining that people with the homosexual inclination are called to chastity.

Fr. Hollowell points out that human beings are able to choose either to act or not to act on given inclinations. Those who experience homosexual attraction, he said, are called upon to refrain from acting on their inclination. Just because someone has an “inclination to something” (for example, drinking alcohol, homosexual acts, etc.) does not make them “less culpable for acting on it,” he said.

Equality Matters claims that 70 percent of Catholics and the majority of Americans now believe that messages such as Fr. Hollowell’s lead to higher rates of homosexual teen suicide.

Hollowell, however, argues that the position he advocates is one of compassion. “If you’re struggling with homosexual attraction, the Church’s first message is compassion,” he told his students, “helping them overcome it is not the first inclination.”

Programs such as Courage are in place to help people “who want it,” he said, “we’re not out there telling people they need to change.”

Fr. Hollowell also described the “key Catholic social teaching” on homosexuality and its relation to the “common good.” By common good is meant “what every human person does affects me and affects everyone else,” said Fr. Hollowell, explaining why students should be concerned about homosexual “marriage” legislation in other states. “The Church sees society as one body, therefore all are affected,” whether we realize it or not.

(End of story. My comments follow.)

This Priest/School Chaplain is teaching the tenants of the Roman Catholic Faith based on the Roman Catholic Catechism in a Roman Catholic School in a Roman Catholic Religion class! His YouTube videos are nothing extreme, you can find a lot more controversial ones just in five minutes of surfing that site.

This is a manufactured controversy, put forth by agenda driven gays who want all criticism of their "lifestyle" muted. Think back even five years ago, we wouldn't have seen a story like this, it'd have been deemed too absurd, on the same level as "FlatEarthers" suing globemakers for their depiction of the Earth.

But in our current times we'll see this and much more as the aggressive homosexuals and their sympathizers become more vocal.

The times of Christian persecution are upon us again.

Persecution of Christian military begins...

A blind man could see this one coming. Taken from catholiccitizens.org, found via Pewsitter.com:

Army: court-martial Chaplains for "religious, conscience" objection to homosexuality. 3/24/2011 9:00:00 AM By PrayinJesusName.org

The U.S. Army has officially threatened military chaplains they must either embrace the new openly homosexual military, resign from service, or face court-martial for their "religious, conscience" objections. The Pray In Jesus Name Project has obtained leaked copies (unintended for media disclosure) of a private briefing given to chaplains, threatening them with court-martial unless they compromise their Christian message.

Christian Chaplains who speak out against homosexual sin can be accused of "harassment" by homosexuals and face disciplinary action simply for voicing their religious views outside the "context" of their religious ministry.

[Chaps' interpretation: The phrase "vocational reflection" is not-so-subtle code language meaning "reconcile with homosexuality or find another line of work." The phrase "do NOT tolerate harassment" is code language for "don't speak against sin, for ANY reason, or you the Chaplain will be disciplined for quoting the Bible, and the homosexual protected."] More fine print from the text from the Army's presentation is directly quoted as follows:

ARMY: "You may hear the language, 'Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual', or 'GLB' at certain times in reference to homosexual Soldiers. As of today the Army has not directed the use of the any specific reference term but has accepted the usage of these terms." ARMY: "You may, in appropriate circumstances and within the limitations of law and policy, express your moral or religious beliefs regarding sexual orientation. However, you may NOT make statements detrimental to good order and discipline and must obey lawful orders. You do NOT have the right to refuse duty or duty assignments based on a moral objection to another's sexual orientation."

[Chaps' Interpretation: the phrase 'appropriate circumstances' will soon mean ONLY in the context of Sunday chapel, thus Chaplains can be punished for private counseling, or speech outside of chapel, or speech inside chapel on Monday through Saturday, just as I was punished in writing 3 times for quoting the Bible in optional Saturday chapel services.]

ARMY: "You remain obligated to follow orders that involve interaction with others who are homosexual even if an unwillingness to do so is based on strong, sincerely held moral or religious beliefs. As expressed in the Manual for Courts-Martial regarding a Soldier's obligation to obey orders: 'the dictates of a person's conscience, religion, or personal philosophy cannot justify or excuse the disobedience of an otherwise lawful order.'"

[Chaps' Interpretation: the phrase 'lawful order' will mean ANYTHING ANTI-CHRISTIAN COMMANDERS WISH and judges will back up the Commander, not the Chaplain. I know from personal experience, when a Navy Judge said my Navy Commander could punish me, a chaplain, for disobeying "lawful orders" because I was quote "worshiping in public."]

Bottom Line: Army Chaplains will now be punished at court-martial for "disobedience" of "lawful orders" if they dare to express their religious views about homsexual sin outside of Sunday chapel.

MILITARY CHAPLAINS FACE CHARGES OF "HATE SPEECH"

The Pray In Jesus Name Project was featured in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week, with YOUR fax petition campaign to Congress getting noticed. Reporter Ann Rogers interviewed military chaplains who fear persecution by the Obama Administration, especially now that open homosexual service is being fast-tracked in violation of the rights of many Christian troops.

"The majority of 3,000 chaplains are theologically conservative Christians, many of whom worry that they will be accused of hate speech if they preach that same-sex relationships are sinful," the paper reports.

"The Pray in Jesus Name Project, which supports conservative chaplains, has called the Pentagon guidelines the 'plan to purge Christians' from chaplaincy. "

'Now the Obama Administration is officially on record pressuring chaplains to quit the service if they cannot 'reconcile' with homosexual sin that violates their Christian conscience,' said a petition on its website.

"The 'purge' is a clause that says chaplains have an option to leave the military that isn't open to others who object to serving with gay troops. They can ask their faith group to withdraw its endorsement, which would trigger a discharge.

"Retired Brig. Gen. Douglas E. Lee, a former Army chaplain who endorses for six conservative Presbyterian bodies, is less alarmist, but shares the concern that protection of religious freedom may erode.

"The fundamental issue for us is morality, but the debate is being purposely framed as a civil rights or a discrimination issue," he said. "Homosexuality is 'just another sin that affects soldiers, airmen, guardians and Marines. However no other category that we would declare as sin is ... claiming civil rights to be a serial adulterer.'

"Any charges of hate speech will 'depend on how the chaplains handle themselves,' said the Rev. John Gundlach, a retired Navy chaplain and endorser for the United Church of Christ, which affirms gay sexuality."

Charges of hate speech against military chaplains? Even the pro-homosexual liberals admit the charges are coming. The full article may be read here. But suffice it to say we need to petition Congress to protect our Christian troops and Chaplains right to open religious expression, the same way the Obama Administration is now flaunting open homosexual expression.

The Obama Administration has now begun writing policies that will result in discharge of Christian Chaplains and troops who cannot "reconcile" with homosexual sin. Below are four shocking proof examples revealing how the purge has already begun, and why we must fight back NOW by demanding Congress investigate and pass strong laws defending our troops right to religious freedom starting with H.R. 268 which has not yet passed in 6 years, clearly defending military chaplains' right to pray publicly "in Jesus name."

1. Report: Chaplains who can't "reconcile" with homosexual sin will be separated.

The newly released Pentagon plan to purge Christians entitled "DADT Report: Support Plan for Implementation" specifically requires Christian chaplains to "reconcile" with homosexual sin or face administrative discharge. It repeats twice on pages 30 and 57: "If a chaplain is unable to reconcile serving with or caring for gay and lesbian Service members with his or her faith, the chaplain may request that the relevant endorsing agency withdraw its ecclesiastical endorsement for him or her. This would trigger an administrative separation under DoDI 1304.28." Wow. Now the Obama Administration is officially on record pressuring Chaplains to quit the service if they cannot "reconcile" with homosexual sin that violates their Christian conscience. This "plan" alone should alarm the new conservative Congress to the need for bold protection of Chaplains' rights. Let's help...

2. Chaplains will have religious "freedom" only in context of Sunday chapel.

The Pentagon report dubiously promises to protect Chaplains' freedoms, "in the context of their religious ministry," claiming they won't need to change their sermons, counseling, prayers, or worship.

But speaking from personal experience as a former Navy chaplain, I can decode the secret word "context" to mean chaplains clearly WON'T have religious freedom outside of that "context." As proof, in my case the Navy twice declared the only safe religious "context" was ONLY inside a Sunday chapel.

As a chaplain I was punished in writing three times for quoting the Bible EVEN inside chapel, but since the optionally-attended worship service was held on a Saturday, not a Sunday, Navy investigators sided with the Commander who punished my sermons. Later a Navy judge ruled that my Thursday prayers outside the White House were "not public worship" which was only safe in the context of Sunday chapel, instead finding me guilty of the misdemeanor crime of "worshipping in public" in uniform which he said was NOT protected by federal law, so my commander could order me to stop "worshipping in public" in uniform. Say what? Because my prayers in Jesus name were not said in the proper "context," they were properly punished, the Navy judge ruled to punish the chaplain.

3. Battalion Commander relieved of duty for refusing to "endorse" open sin.

One Senior Officer in the Army National Guard has already been relieved of his battalion-level commanding officer job after stating his conscience would not allow him to participate in "re-education" training that will soon force young Christians to learn how to respect homosexual sin. "Today is my last day in command," the career Army officer told WND.com, anonymously for fear of losing his retirement. "From now on I'll be a staff officer without a bunch of people working under me, so I won't have the moral conflict with having to enforce this new policy on them...When I retire I will speak on the record. I don't know how much I can do before that. Sooner or later I'm going to get told to shut up. If I continue to make statements, it might become a witch hunt. I don't want to lose my retirement unless it comes to the point they tell me I have to attend the [pro-'gay'] training."

4. Left demands punishment of Christian Colonel who is taking a stand.

Atheist bloggers and anti-Christian complainers are demanding punishment for one heroic career Army officer, Lt. Col. Stacy L. Maxey, who said he will exercise his legal right to take a stand for Jesus against homosexual sin by publicly expressing his Christian beliefs.

In a letter to Stars and Stripes entitled "Won't Choose To Deal With It," Lt. Col. Maxey took a stand, and wrote: "So let me see if I understand this: The Defense Department is proposing to let people who choose to live a homosexual lifestyle serve 'openly' in the armed forces, but won't allow Christians such as myself the freedom to 'openly' share the good news of Christ with our co-workers - as the faith we've chosen requires?

"DOD officials plan to tell servicemembers who have a problem with those living a homosexual lifestyle to 'learn to deal with it,' but they are prepared to counsel and/or slap Christians with paperwork if someone feels "offended" by our witness? Wearing sexual lifestyle choices on your sleeve is OK, but not your faith?

"Military chaplains who teach that homosexuality is antithetical to and incompatible with Christianity (which it is) can either muzzle their objections or 'leave,' but gays will be permitted to parade their lifestyle choices in front of all?

"Bottom line: So I'm free to express myself if I'm a homosexual, but not if I'm a Christian? What disgraceful hypocrisy. "Here's the truth: I will continue to witness to who I want, when I want and where I want. My commitment to my God supersedes my commitment to the DOD and, if officials are upset about that, then I guess they can 'learn to deal with it.'

"Department of Defense? More like the Department of Double Standards." --Lt. Col. Stacy L. Maxey, Afghanistan

(End of story. My comments follow.)

This is what happens when you use the military to advance an agenda. The chaplains could have preached their heads off about adulterous heterosexuals with no consequences. But gay military members are a protected class.

If you think this will stop with military chaplains, think again. Our freedom of religious expression is going to be severly curtailed PDQ.

Obama's speech deconstructed...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- There may be less than meets the eye to President Barack Obama's statements Monday night that NATO is taking over from the U.S. in Libya and that U.S. action is limited to defending people under attack there by Moammar Gadhafi's forces. In transferring command and control to NATO, the U.S. is turning the reins over to an organization dominated by the U.S., both militarily and politically. In essence, the U.S. runs the show that is taking over running the show. And the rapid advance of rebels in recent days strongly suggests they are not merely benefiting from military aid in a defensive crouch, but rather using the multinational force in some fashion - coordinated or not - to advance an offensive. Here is a look at some of Obama's assertions in his address to the nation Monday, and how they compare with the facts: ---

OBAMA: "Our most effective alliance, NATO, has taken command of the enforcement of the arms embargo and no-fly zone. ... Going forward, the lead in enforcing the no-fly zone and protecting civilians on the ground will transition to our allies and partners, and I am fully confident that our coalition will keep the pressure on Gadhafi's remaining forces. In that effort, the United States will play a supporting role."
THE FACTS: As by far the pre-eminent player in NATO, and a nation historically reluctant to put its forces under operational foreign command, the United States will not be taking a back seat in the campaign even as its profile diminishes for public consumption. NATO partners are bringing more into the fight. But the same "unique capabilities" that made the U.S. the inevitable leader out of the gate will continue to be in demand. They include a range of attack aircraft, refueling tankers that can keep aircraft airborne for lengthy periods, surveillance aircraft that can detect when Libyans even try to get a plane airborne, and, as Obama said, planes loaded with electronic gear that can gather intelligence or jam enemy communications and radars. The United States supplies 22 percent of NATO's budget, almost as much as the next largest contributors - Britain and France - combined. A Canadian three-star general was selected to be in charge of all NATO operations in Libya. His boss, the commander of NATO's Allied Joint Force Command Naples, is an American admiral, and the admiral's boss is the supreme allied commander Europe, a post always held by an American. ---

OBAMA: "Our military mission is narrowly focused on saving lives."
THE FACTS: Even as the U.S. steps back as the nominal leader, reduces some assets and fires a declining number of cruise missiles, the scope of the mission appears to be expanding and the end game remains unclear. Despite insistences that the operation is only to protect civilians, the airstrikes now are undeniably helping the rebels to advance. U.S. officials acknowledge that the effect of air attacks on Gadhafi's forces - and on the supply and communications links that support them - is useful if not crucial to the rebels. "Clearly they're achieving a benefit from the actions that we're taking," Navy Vice Adm. William Gortney, staff director for the Joint Chiefs, said Monday. The Pentagon has been turning to air power of a kind more useful than high-flying bombers in engaging Libyan ground forces. So far these have included low-flying Air Force AC-130 and A-10 attack aircraft, and the Pentagon is considering adding armed drones and helicopters. Obama said "we continue to pursue the broader goal of a Libya that belongs not to a dictator, but to its people," but spoke of achieving that through diplomacy and political pressure, not force of U.S. arms. ---

OBAMA: Seeking to justify military intervention, the president said the U.S. has "an important strategic interest in preventing Gadhafi from overrunning those who oppose him. A massacre would have driven thousands of additional refugees across Libya's borders, putting enormous strains on the peaceful - yet fragile - transitions in Egypt and Tunisia." He added: "I am convinced that a failure to act in Libya would have carried a far greater price for America."
THE FACTS: Obama did not wait to make that case to Congress, despite his past statements that presidents should get congressional authorization before taking the country to war, absent a threat to the nation that cannot wait. "The president does not have the power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation," he told The Boston Globe in 2007 in his presidential campaign. "History has shown us time and again ... that military action is most successful when it is authorized and supported by the legislative branch." Obama's defense secretary, Robert Gates, said Sunday that the crisis in Libya "was not a vital national interest to the United States, but it was an interest." ---

OBAMA: "And tonight, I can report that we have stopped Gadhafi's deadly advance."
THE FACTS: The weeklong international barrage has disabled Libya's air defenses, communications networks and supply chains. But Gadhafi's ground forces remain a potent threat to the rebels and civilians, according to U.S. military officials. Army Gen. Carter Ham, the top American officer overseeing the mission, told The New York Times on Monday that "the regime still overmatches opposition forces militarily. The regime possesses the capability to roll them back very quickly. Coalition air power is the major reason that has not happened." Only small numbers of Gadhafi's troops have defected to the opposition, Ham said. At the Pentagon, Vice Adm. William Gortney, staff director for the Joint Chiefs, said the rebels are not well organized. "It is not a very robust organization," he said. "So any gain that they make is tenuous based on that." ---

OBAMA: "Some nations may be able to turn a blind eye to atrocities in other countries. The United States of America is different. And as president, I refused to wait for the images of slaughter and mass graves before taking action."
THE FACTS: Mass violence against civilians has also been escalating elsewhere, without any U.S. military intervention anticipated. More than 1 million people have fled the Ivory Coast, where the U.N. says forces loyal to the incumbent leader, Laurent Gbagbo, have used heavy weapons against the population and more than 460 killings have been confirmed of supporters of the internationally recognized president, Alassane Ouattara. The Obama administration says Gbagbo and Gadhafi have both lost their legitimacy to rule. But only one is under attack from the U.S. Presidents typically pick their fights according to the crisis and circumstances at hand, not any consistent doctrine about when to use force in one place and not another. They have been criticized for doing so - by Obama himself.

In his pre-presidential book "The Audacity of Hope," Obama said the U.S. will lack international legitimacy if it intervenes militarily "without a well-articulated strategy that the public supports and the world understands." He questioned: "Why invade Iraq and not North Korea or Burma? Why intervene in Bosnia and not Darfur?"

Now, such questions are coming at him.

Another family to remember in prayer...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - This is the story about the power of love, the strength of community, and the indomitable will to live.

In a nine-day span, both Nathan Bond, 38, and his wife, 36-year-old Elisa, learned that they have advanced cancer. Nathan found out on Valentine’s Day.

Nathan has Stage 3 colorectal cancer. He has been given given a 60% chance of surviving five years or more. Elisa has Stage 4 breast cancer and has just a 16% chance of surviving five years.

Just 18-months-ago, the couple celebrated the birth of their daughter and the parents are now painfully planning Sadie’s future without them.

Family and friends have created a Web page to help raise money for the Bay Ridge couple.

The blog features heartwarming family photos and a wedding video that shows the smiling couple with all the promise of a bright future.

The site has so far raised $25,000 for medical expenses and daycare, enfolding the couple in an embrace of love and support, so they can focus on healing.

“We started getting calls from strangers that heard about this and want to help out; it’s just amazing that this type of situation has brought out so much good will,” relative Lauren Weiner told WCBS 880’s Sean Adams.

In an e-mail, Elisa Bond said, “We are at the very beginning of this journey; a journey we pray we will travel with grace and one we are grateful to be traveling with the support and love our family, friends and even kind strangers.”

On bullies and the kid who fought back...

I found this on www.americanthinker.com:
Yes, Violence Can be the Answer
by Selwyn Duke

It was the body slam heard around the world. When some Australian schoolboys decided to videotape themselves bullying 15-year old Casey Heynes, one of them got more than he bargained for. Casey, who had been pushed around and humiliated for years, responded to a punch in his face and other attempted blows by hoisting his tormentor WWE style and introducing him to the pavement. The result was a video that went viral in a way the bullies had never imagined and for a reason they certainly had never hoped: Casey has become a hero worldwide.

That is, a hero to everyone except the "experts." Ah, the experts, uncommon people you can rely on for all-too-common senselessness. As The Sydney Morning Herald writes:

[P]olice and bullying experts are concerned by...the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the older boy's retaliation against his attacker.

"We don't believe that violence is ever the answer," Mr Dalgleish [John Dalgleish, head of research at Kids Helpline and Boys Town] says. "We believe there are other ways that children can manage this."

Yes, Casey could have done a ‘50s-style duck-and-cover. Hey, kid, don't you know you should just cower and curl up into a ball? And, for sure, violence is never the answer...except with the Nazis, Mussolini, and Napoleon; during the American Revolution, the Barbary Wars, and the Battle of Tours; and when stopping the criminals during the North Hollywood Shootout, University of Texas Tower Shooting, and incidents every single day in which someone, somewhere uses physical force to thwart a crime. It's never the answer -- except, sometimes, when you actually have to deal with reality.

It's hard to say what is more irritating about the "Violence is never the answer" nonsense, the stupidity or the insincerity of it. It's much like the mantra "Our strength lies in our diversity." It's something people say because it's a repeated big lie that has become "truth" and is politically correct; it's a reflexive platitude uttered politician-like because that's what "experts" are expected to say. But if Mr. Dalgleish's wife or child is attacked on the street, will he not find violence a very good answer?

Perhaps he'll take the advice of another expert, child psychologist Susan Bartell, and find some other way to "manage" it. When analyzing Casey's response, she said, "A better course of action...would have been for him to walk away. Would have been for him to immediately take the power away from the bully, who was punching him in the face, and just run away, walk away...." "Take the power away from the bully...." Good psychobabble that. Lady, Casey did take the power away from the bully by making sure the bully couldn't walk away.

The problem today is that we elevate experts above wise men. And one of the signs of a decaying civilization is when those in authority prescribe unrealistic rules for the population, rules that they themselves would never, and could never, follow. As to this, here is the rest of Dr. Bartell's advice: "...walk away, and go and find the principal, the guidance counselor, teacher and tell them what had just happened to him. Because those adults are really in a position to stop a child who is a bully...."

Again, this is ideology; it's what she learned to say in psychology class. And let's apply this to the adult world. If Mr. Dalgleish tried to "manage" an attack on his child by walking away and finding a police officer, the help he'd need might be in the area of forensic medicine. And even if he were alone, it's not always possible to walk away. This is why billions of dollars are made off self-defense classes.

Another bit of obligatory-utterance advice offered by psychologist Bartell is the nonsense that "those adults [school officials] are really in a position to stop a child who is a bully." What bunk. It's hard to even call these adults authority figures anymore, as handcuffed by the law and their own ideology as they are. These are people who think that "punishment" is a dirty word and a "time out" is enough to forestall dirty deeds. And, even insofar as they may possess a hidden firm hand, they're too shackled by education's "rules of engagement" and the fear of lawsuits to exercise it. Why do you think educators have, outrageously, sometimes responded to a bullied pupil by telling him to leave school? The truth is that the only time punishment doesn't fail to measure up to the behavior today is when a student violates a code of political correctness, such when a little boy doodles a gun on a piece of paper, gives a willing six-year-old girl a peck on the cheek or politely holds open a school door for an adult. As far as real transgressions go, however, it's see, hear and speak no evil; keep your head down; and punch the time clock.

And all you have to do is ask Casey. A nice, extremely articulate boy, as this interview shows, he had been bullied virtually every day for many years now. And where were the "adults"? Perhaps they didn't know -- and for sure they didn't act. Either way, they were incompetent and guilty of a grave sin of omission. And the kicker is that, after failing to secure a safe environment for their students, these educators turn around and tell the kids that they also may not save themselves. They'll say that "violence is never the answer" and then punish the victim the same as the victimizer. But would they want to be subject to the same standard? If they're assaulted on the street, perhaps they should go to prison for as long as the assailant. I mean, it takes two to tango, right?

And understand that this is the gun-control mentality, the mind-set that disempowers the people. It's much as during Hurricane Katrina. Like declawing a cat and then throwing him to the wolves, the New Orleans police confiscated weapons from law-abiding citizens while doing nothing about the roving gangs that would prey upon those citizens (hey, gangs might actually shoot back).

As for law enforcement, while I generally defend cops, they're much the same as school administrators. They make the same politically correct statements, such as saying they're "concerned" about the support for Casey's actions or responding to an obvious anti-white "hate crime" by claiming that they're unsure of the motive. They will tell citizens not to take matters into their own hands and instead call the proper authorities, yet, when people do the latter, they find that they sometimes end up like the gun-doodling little boy. (There recently was a New Jersey case in which a social worker called the police because she was worried that her son might be suicidal, and the man ended up being arrested and going to prison for possession of legally obtained firearms.)

So we're not supposed to take the law into our own hands even though, increasingly, the law isn't handling things. Students have to deal with do-nothing teachers and citizens with do-the-wrong-thing cops, and we're supposed to lay down our fists and arms and have confidence in the powers-that-be?

And this brings me back to violence never solving anything. If the Dalgleishes of the world really believed this, they would dissolve the military and trade the police for social workers. But it's not surprising that people famous for situational values (i.e., liberals) would also subscribe to situational pacifism. If a criminal resists arrest, they will expect the cops to use violence to apprehend him; moreover, they will actually relish it, I'm sure, if some miscreant is imperiling them. And this is fine. But here is what isn't fine: saying that what is often valid for people inside government is never valid for people outside government. Their real message is that violence is never the answer -- for the subjects. It's just peachy for the state, though.

And this way lies tyranny. There is a balance to things, and as citizen courage wanes government power inevitably waxes. G.K. Chesterton spoke of this phenomenon, writing, "[T]he Pretorian guard became more and more important in Rome as Rome became more and more luxurious and feeble. The military man gains the civil power in proportion as the civilian loses the military virtues." And when pondering this, I think of the parents who called the police to deal with an unruly prepubescent child. Like so many today, perhaps spanking was anathema to them as "violence is never the answer." But it was the answer. All their weakness did is ensure that the government would become the agent of it.

The reality is that, like amputation and many other unpleasant things, physical force has its place. After all, violence is not the best way to settle differences. Sometimes, however, it is the only way to prevent them from being settled for you.

Great piece. He covers all bases.

As a child whenever I was bullied I was exhorted to take the high road and just walk away. This came from my father, the brawler who didn't let the loss of his leg stop him from getting in barroom dustups. When I DID get into fights it was always somehow my fault due to my size because it was "ridiculous" to think a smaller boy would try bullying a larger one (I've always been taller & heavier than most of my peers.) If you think a smaller child never, ever picks on a bigger one just look at the video that started all this flap. Sometimes it's the small ones that are real assholes, just trying to prove they're as "good" as their larger peers. Think "Napolean Complex".

Hell will freeze before I give that crappy "just walk away" advice to my kids. They'll be encouraged to hit back and do it often, that includes my daughter. Then the chips can fall where they may but I'll be backing my child to the hilt when I'm called in to speak to whatever authority figure has gotten involved.

I mean really, it's nonsense to believe allowing yourself to be the object of some idiot's abusive attention will result in eventual peace, love and camaraderie for all concerned. Life isn't like that at all.

Give the little jerk what he really wants, i.e. five from the sky right in the piehole. Then dish out a serving to his buddies too.

On our Libyan intervention...

We're going about this is the most half-assed fashion possible.

B.O. should have gotten an okay from Congress before sending in the planes & troops. Our objectives should be clear and easily understood. When using our military they should be allowed to do what they're trained for with no "Monday morning quarterbacking" from Foggy Bottom.

Get in, get out. Do it with the minimum loss of American life. Screw the rest of the world and their opinions. End of story.

77 year old woman attacked, police respond with a yawn...

Kalispell, Mont., Mar 22, 2011 / 06:51 am (CNA).- The “tepid” and “rude” police response to a firebomb attack on a pro-life demonstrator outside a Kalispell, Montana abortion clinic merits disciplinary action, the head of a Catholic legal group said.

Poor police response to these types of incidents could “legitimize” the tactic, warned Tom Brejcha, president and chief counsel of the Chicago-based Thomas More Society.

“There has to be an utter condemnation of the use of violent tactics from both sides of the abortion debate. Any kind of coddling, or treating it as a normal thing would only provoke violent actions,” Brejcha told CNA on March 21.

Participants in the local 40 Days for Life prayer vigil were on the sidewalk near the All Family Health Care abortion center on March 17 around 6:15 p.m. An unidentified assailant threw a homemade incendiary device at an elderly woman, although it landed behind her.

The device, a water bottle filled with a flammable liquid, made a loud popping noise like a big firecracker and burst into flame.

Brejcha criticized the initial police reaction as “tepid” and “outrageous.”

“The officer responding to the 911 call took half an hour to get to the scene. He was very brusque and rude. When the 77-year-old lady held out her hand to greet him, he just ignored her and walked right past her,” Brejcha said.

When asked if he was going to have the residue collected as evidence, he said there wouldn’t be any fingerprints and he “just called the garbage folks to collect the debris.”

When the coordinator of the 40 Days event called the desk sergeant to complain about the officer’s “rather nonchalant response” to a “serious bombing incident,” he continued, the desk officer “pretty much said what the police officer said.”

According to Brejcha, the officer remarked that “it was reasonable that people would react this way when you’re out there protesting on a public sidewalk.”

“Of course, those reactions are just outrageous. This was a serious incident, a violent attack with a firebomb that exploded on impact and could have caused very serious impact to this lady.”

He added that those involved have received many calls from Kalispell police officers and others in the area, disagreeing “strongly” with the officers’ response.

“The reaction of these police officers should not be taken as typical,” he said.

The group intends to pursue disciplinary charges against the two officers.

“We’re not looking for a pound of flesh or anything, but it’s a very serious matter when law enforcement is unresponsive as they were in this case.”

Mary Anne Hofmann, the attacked woman, was “very startled” but is “a rather unflappable person,” Brejcha reported. “She’s going to keep on doing what she was doing.”

“There was another bombing at a Target store close to the same time. The two incidents may be related,” Brejcha surmised.

There was also an eyewitness of the attack on the woman who could help the investigation. He was not associated with the pro-life group.

Brejcha said there had been no incidents at this clinic other than a water balloon attack. He does know of other menacing incidents towards pro-life demonstrators at other clinics, but nothing involving a firebomb-like device.

The Thomas More Society is in contact with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms about the Kalispell case.

Brejcha said that the FBI and the ATF have been “very active in policing the activity of pro-lifers at abortion sites.”

“We expect them to be equally aggressive in this matter.

(End of story. My comments follow.)

I tried rationalizing the police response to this. Anyone who reads this blog knows I'm sympathetic to the cops. They've a tough job and no denying it. They can go from witnessing a teenager literally blow his head off with a 12 gauge shotgun on Monday to dealing with a red light running jerk the next day who wants to know "why don't you go after real criminals"? As far as a career choice, being an LEO is not exactly my cup of tea.

So I've a lot of sympathy for the cops. Even the ones who act like jerks. You never know where they just came from.

But the response mentioned here is flat out wrong, evidently a fair number of other police officers in that city felt that way also.
I've a feeling things are going to get a lot worse soon. Perhaps not so much with those protesting abortion, but the Culture of Death has other interests that will be harder to argue against.

I'm thinking about gay "marriage", and euthanasia in particular. It'll be hard to argue against the attitude of "everyone deserves to unconditionally love someone else" when talking to the relative of a gay person. It'll be equally hard to look in the eyes of someone whose loved one is in terminal pain and try convincing that relative it's flat wrong to ease the suffering their family member is going through.

THEN we'll really have a problem with physical attacks on anyone opposing the devaluing of life.

The sort of attack this article mentions is only a warm up for the main event.

Another Catholic soldier down?

Another well known priest has been placed on administrative leave following allegations of inappropriate conduct. See here for a good analysis of the current situation regarding Fr. Corapi: http://www.ncregister.com/blog/fr.-corapi-convicted-already/

As I stood on a sidewalk outside a Planned Parenthood satellite facility today I was talking to another person involved in the prolife vigil there. Her take on it was that we're losing all the strong voices for the Church. I disagreed, thats what this post is about.

Yep, the more publicly recognized voices seem to be getting silenced lately. Fr. Euteneuer recently disappeared from public view, as I mentioned here: http://agangershome.blogspot.com/2011/02/father-euteneuer-and-his-current.html and now Fr. Corapi is quieted. Two very strong voices indeed.

But each one of us has a voice, each one of us can be heard. Perhaps not as well as the more famous of our Church's defenders, but they CAN be heard.

None of this should surprise anyone, Christ promised His followers they'd be persecuted just as He was. Thats always been a constant for devout Catholics.

He also promised that if we deny Him in this life, we'd be denied in the next. What goes around comes back around. But nothing in that says our voices have to enjoy a certain measure of success.

So perhaps another strong Catholic voice has been rendered mute. That just means the rest of us will have to sing out a bit louder now. Let's keep the teachings of the Magisterium foremost in our minds, that way we stay in tune.

End of story.

Break's over, everyone back on your head!

So I spent the weekend on a men's retreat for my church. I was appointed sacristan which amounted to staying in the homemade chapel after the Eucharist was exposed and we had Eucharistic Adoration in gear. I shared the duties with the liturgist but my main purpose was to be the body on the scene. The Real Presence is never left unattended. That explains in part why I came home Sunday at 5 PM with only three hours of sleep under my belt since Saturday morning.

I was tucked in by the wife at 7, woke at 1:45 AM to the sound of my daughter in our bedroom, hacking and coughing. That was right before she threw up on the bedsheets.

Here I now sit while my little girl happily watches Curious George movies. She'll go to the doctor later in the morning, probably with the wife who is off today. It really isn't any big deal, we've been down this road before. As a matter of fact the doctor's receptionist doesn't even quiz us for information on the kids. She just verifies which one is sick (again) and tells us how soon we can come in.

In the meantime it's five in the morning, my daughter's meds have kicked in, the wife is asleep, the bedsheets are washing/drying while the bread maker preps the dough I'll need for making fresh doughnuts (chocolate covered of course).

Soon her brothers will wake up and chaos will ensue until they're off to school. I'll get dropped off by the wife so I can do a prayer vigil outside a local Planned Parenthood office, something I try to do about twice a week. Later we'll have lunch with the girl, I'll start the crock pot with a pork roast. One of us will get the boys at three and the chaos restarts once they're home. All of it will end about eight tonight, after which I just MIGHT get some more sleep.

It's just another week starting up.

Life goes on. Funny thing is, I wouldn't have it any other way.

"Submit to the operation or lose your kid."

Found this via Pewsitter at both LifeSiteNews.com and www.dailymail.co.uk (where I copied it from);

Baby girl kept away from mother for five years after she refused to sign C-section consent form

A baby girl has been kept away from her mother for almost five years after she refused to sign a form consenting to a Caesarean section - even though she did not end up needing to have the operation. (the emphasis is mine)

The extraordinary case began after staff at a New Jersey hospital claimed that refusal to give permission for the procedure amounted to child abuse.

The agonising decision triggered a protracted legal battle which has led to the mother being separated from her child for five years.

The woman, known only as VM, launched an appeal after authorities took her baby away from her immediately after the birth in 2006 at St Barnabas Hospital in New Jersey.

The first appeal failed but she was given a ray of hope when a higher court ruled in her favour.

The case is now waiting to go back to the lower court which is yet to make a decision.

The hospital said that her refusal to give permission for the C-section amounted to child abuse and thus reported her to welfare authorities.

This was despite VM saying that she would agree to the operation if it became necessary and going on to deliver a healthy baby.

The courts agreed with welfare agencies in New Jersey that the baby, born on April 16 2006, should be kept in care and revoked parental rights.

VM was successful at an appeal hearing that reversed the lower court's decision saying that the mother was 'unwilling or unable to eliminate the harm facing the child' and that 'termination of parental rights will not do more harm than good.'

In its ruling the Superior Court in New Jersey said: 'JMG cannot be lost in this process. She is "the beating heart at the centre of this controversy" and she is entitled to the benefit of permanency with parents who hopefully will be in a position both physically and mentally to sustain her.

'Unfortunately that decision cannot yet be made. In the interim, she has been the beneficiary of a loving foster home but at the same time, she has a sustained relationship with loving parents.

'Termination (of parental rights) is among the most extraordinary remedies that can be exercised by a court. We must insist that the remedy be reserved for those instances where the state meets the extraordinary burden imposed by the law.

'That burden has not been met here.'

According to the original appeal hearing, when VM went into labour medical professionals at the hospital said she 'demonstrated combative and erratic behaviour including a refusal to consent to a Caesarean section.

'Despite the medical opinion that the foetus demonstrated signs of distress and that the procedure was necessary to avoid imminent danger to the foetus, the child was born by vaginal delivery without incident.'

At the appeal in 2009, the court gave the baby's father, BG, access to his daughter but ruled that she should remain in the care of the authorities.

The Superior Court made its decision in August last year and the family is now waiting to hear whether or not it can be reunited.

(End of story. My comments follow.)

How soon before this becomes standard practice? How soon before the threat of losing your child is used to coerce someone into having other medical procedures, such as aborting a baby because "Mom and Dad" already have too many children and can't provide an arbitrarily determined quality of life for their kids if there's another mouth to feed?

Do you think that might be farfetched? Just how farfetched would this story have seemed not too long ago?

We've gone from medical personnel providing needed services to them becoming our self-appointed lords and masters. This is happening WITHOUT universally government funded healthcare (althought the couple in question seem to have been on the dole). Just how will this "I know better than you" attitude and arrogance skyrocket once we have our healthcare system completely taken over by the Feds? Check the attitude at your local DMV for an idea of where it might end.

About those nuclear reactors in Japan...

...and their damage due to the earthquake there.

Reading the stories concerning the radiation released shows that the man on the street knows less about nuclear power than prostitutes know about virginity. Really. I'm reminded of all the "creature feature" flicks from the 50's that showed the potential dangers of atomic radiation. That included giant ants, plant-human hybrids, visits from concerned alien civilizations, you name it, nothing was too ridiculous to ponder in a serious manner.

The underlying message was (and still is) "We shouldn't play God or we'll get smacked good and hard". Why that rationale is enthusiastically pursued by liberal loons regarding nuclear power and is totally ignored by the same folks whenever abortion is mentioned is a puzzler.

Reactors aren't bombs and can't explode like one either. The worst that happens is the containment vessel and the coolant within overheat to the point of rupturing (think of hot water heaters without an automatic safety relief). No Apocalypse, no end of the world, just a big assed mess to clean up afterwards. Again, about like what would happen if my hot water heater ever overpressurized due to heat.

In addition, at least one of those reactors was 30-40 years old. Wanna bet it's safety features and their back-ups might not have been state-of-the-art? I mention this because of all the anxiety from the antinuke crowd who are now hysterically hyperventilating over the idea of future reactors being built.

Thats the CliffNotes version of it all. ANY form of power is going to have risks associated with it's use, end of story.

Deal with it or go back to cave dwelling, only this time don't have campfires because of their environmental risks (Smokey The Bear, where are you when we need ya?)

The powers that be should concentrate on aiding the Japanese and getting that nation back on it's feet. After all the dust settles, worry about the nukes and preventing future problems.

Just the opinion of an old turd chaser.

Another meddlesome archbishop fouling the waters...

Found this via Pewsitter, on www.afro.com;

Black Catholic School Community, Archbishop Clash on Paddling Policy

An archbishop has ordered officials at a Black Catholic school in New Orleans to refrain from corporal punishment practices, despite the support of many students and families for the disciplinary measures.

Students at St. Augustine High School, a predominantly Black all-male catholic school, are paddled for tardiness, misbehavior and sloppy appearances—a policy that many students and families say keeps them out of trouble.

“It didn’t hurt him; he’s fine,” Carol Lewis told New Orleans NBC affiliate WDSU of her son, a St. Augustine graduate. “He’s a grown man now; he’s doing well and no harm has ever come to him. He’s never been to prison, never been picked up by the cops, none of that kind of stuff. He did not suffer from a paddle once in his life.”

But at a town hall meeting Feb 24, Gregory Aymond, archbishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, said he could not “possibly condone” corporal punishment, noting that St. Augustine was the only Catholic school in the nation to continue the practice.

“My image of Jesus is that he said, ‘Let the children come to me.’ I cannot imagine Jesus paddling anyone,” he reportedly said at the assembly.

In an interview with WDSU, he said he understood why the St. Augustine community favors the practice.

“St. Aug is different, it’s unique, the culture and so forth. And I think all those things need to be looked at but...it (paddling) weighs heavy on my heart,” he said.

According to a statement posted on the school’s Web site, St. Augustine alumni, current students, parents, school administration and other supporters of corporate punishment packed the town hall meeting and “clearly did not buy the ‘arguments’ proposed by the archdiocese.”

It went on to say many supporters were dismayed that persons outside the Black community were trying to dictate how the school should run.

“Many expressed outrage that African-American parents (have) to haggle with non-African-Americans about how to raise their own sons!,” the statement read.

The school’s principal told New Orleans archdiocese newspaper The Clarion Herald that misbehavior has increased since the school stopped the physical punishment five months ago.

“What has happened is that the infractions that would have stopped by now have continued to rise, causing the severity of the penalties to increase,” Don Boucree said.

The archbishop suggested officials engage in prayer and dialogue to discipline the students. He told media outlets he has received complaints about St. Augustine’s paddling and heard reports of injuries.

Daniel Daviller of the school’s board of directors said he expects the debate to continue, but says school officials stand firm in their beliefs.

“Discipline has always been a hallmark of the St. Augustine educational experience and it will continue to be a very high priority here regardless of what happens in the discussions going forward,” he said.

(End of story. My comments follow.)

This is another proof of how clueless anyone who has never had children are when it comes to their upbringing. FWIW, my paternal grandmother had eight kids and was oft quoted as saying, "If you pat them low enough, hard enough, they'll always behave."

The archbishop should tend to something he can handle, like raising money for this school.

Well that one didn't work worth a hoot...

First I was going to give up all use of the computer for Lent. But then I realized my men's group from church used emails to communicate and we've got an upcoming retreat in less than two weeks. So I compromised and figured "email only".

Then I discovered some work I'm doing for the retreat requires extensive research. Since I don't live in a library (and our libraries don't have a lot of the necessary material anyway) that meant use of the internet was required to do a decent job.

Then I got a couple of hyperlinks in my emails for information on topics of the emails.

Screw it. I'll do an extra five decades of the rosary every day instead.

Shutting down for Lent....

....and that means everything having to do with a computer except my email. I'll be back after Easter (odd, giving things up is supposed to be a chore. I feel happy, maybe it's time for a break. Whatever.)

Another friendship gone...

So I went to Facebook last night and came across a posting by the wife of an old shipmate. She was railing against the supposed double standard shown by the proliferation of divorce in this nation while cultural conservatives state acceptance of gay "marriage" will weaken the institution.

I replied by noting the examples she'd given of the rich and famous in scandal were nothing new, even the Bible shows how dissolute the lives of the famous can be. Then I noted how divorce had been accepted in the Old Testament and was allowed by most Christian denominations but gay "marriage" has never been (except perhaps in the city of Sodom). I wrapped it up by citing the use of hate crime laws against Christians in the pulpits of nations that allow gay "marriage" when the clerics spoke against homosexuality.

She then informed me that her daughter had become a lesbian and why shouldn't she be able to marry someone who makes her happy?

I merely replied further discussion wasn't possible (does anyone think she would have truly listened) and that I'd pray for their family.

Guess a few years back I'd have been noncommittal and accepting since it didn't affect anyone close to me. But being Catholic for me means acknowledging my relationship to Christ in this life so He'll acknowledge it in the next. Losing my soul due to not speaking out doesn't sound too bright.

Another shipmate once remarked that living as a devout Catholic was harder than hell. Guess it can be so at times.

Tough shit, next case.

To all fellow military retirees: BOHICA, MF

Found this at thehill.com via Lucianne.com, some harsh language is in my commentary:

Military healthcare reform no longer taboo to talk about
By John T. Bennett - 02/28/11 08:05 PM ET

For the first time in nearly 20 years, members of the U.S. military might have to pay more for healthcare.

With the nation at war for nearly a decade, military healthcare and benefit programs have been considered sacrosanct. The Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts have generated reverence among the public for the U.S. military, making it unthinkable for most lawmakers to vote against any proposal that would take dollars out of troops’ pockets.

“This is one of the hardest rocks to crack,” said Gordon Adams, who ran defense budgeting for the Clinton administration. Reform in the area of benefits has proven “very, very hard,” he added.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Michael Mullen, however, are pushing of late for a modest hike in healthcare premiums paid by military members, and some lawmakers are listening.

Mullen recently told the House Armed Services Committee that people costs account for “60 [percent] to 70 percent of our budget,” adding that the military is “on track to almost be immobilized” by healthcare and benefits costs.

To begin paring down some of those bills, the Pentagon’s 2012 budget plan seeks to increase medical premiums for working-age military retirees by $30 — from $230 to $260 — and by $60 for family policies — from $460 to $520. That plan is one aspect of a Pentagon goal of slashing personnel costs by about $7 billion.

Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), House Armed Services Committee ranking member, recently told reporters changes are needed to bring down costs.

“We have to examine where some of that money is going,” Smith said during a Feb. 17 breakfast with reporters in Washington. “It is a significant driver of the budget.”

When a business encounters budget trouble, “the first place it goes is labor costs,” Smith said. “There may have to be some increases in those fees [for] employment-age retirees.”

Asked about DoD healthcare changes during a Feb. 15 roundtable with reporters, Rep. Michael Turner (R-Ohio), chairman of the House Armed Services Strategic Forces subcommittee, said: “Everything needs to be on the table” as Washington grapples with its budgetary woes.

Other lawmakers are talking openly about — or at least not dismissing outright — changes to DoD healthcare policies untouched since 1995. That was the last time any fees in TRICARE — the name of the decades-old military healthcare system — were changed.

Pentagon officials have tried in recent years to bring about changes.

During a major budget speech last May, Gates referred to several attempts by the department to convince lawmakers to approve “modest [TRICARE] increases in premiums and co-pays.” All were defeated by a “furious response from Congress and veterans groups,” Gates said.

Defense leaders were spurred to seek those increases because “healthcare costs are eating the Defense Department alive,” Gates said at the time.

The military expected to spend $244 billion on personnel costs in 2010, more than a third of the $636 billion appropriated to DoD. Some analysts peg the actual number at over $300 billion.

Pentagon officials have said healthcare costs have swelled over the last 10 years, from $19 billion to $50 billion.

With the nation in dire fiscal straits and the defense budget expected to shrink, Congress watchers see lawmakers’ resistance ebbing.

David Berteau, a former Defense Department official and now a Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) analyst, said “the votes may be there this time.”

Berteau sees evidence of “cracks in the uniform procedure of voting against” dollars for defense programs.

Any enacted reforms likely will come after several legislative moves, “not a one-time, everyone-come-together kind of solution,” Berteau said Friday.

But there will be resistance among some lawmakers.

One is Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.), who has promised to fight the department’s latest try to boost premiums.

“As someone who grew up in the military and served in the military, I start from the presumption that lifetime healthcare for career military personnel is part of a moral contract between our government and those who have stepped forward to serve,” Webb said in a statement. “For this reason, I oppose any proposal to raise TRICARE fees for military retirees.”

Some say tightening budgets and ever-escalating personnel costs are setting up a fight inside the Pentagon budget: people versus machines.

But Michael Bayer, until recently chairman of the influential Defense Business Board, on Friday said personnel programs will compete for funding with overhead and support functions, not hardware programs.

“Political constituencies for forces decline and increase for overhead over time,” Bayer said. “In past [defense spending] downturns, overhead and support won political [battles] with forces.”

(End of story. My comments follow.)

Patriotism doesn't end with retirement after a military career. There will be occasions when those of us who proudly wore this nation's military uniform can bet we'll be asked for further sacrifice.

So I'll go for having my medical benefits adjusted AGAIN (as the article states, it last happened in 1995) if that's what the country needs. But only if every other federal retiree of any stripe, every federal welfare queen, every Medicare/Medicaid/SSI recipient is impacted in a similar manner. That means each and every swinging dick currently sucking on the public tit.

Otherwise stand the fuck by, if you think the NRA has clout in Washington just wait until all the veterans organizations get revved up on this one.
