Obama Faith Council Debates Religious Icons
By William Wan
Obama's faith council is finalizing its draft report this week, and one of the key debates that emerged from the phone conference yesterday was whether there should be rules requiring religious groups to cover up religious symbols if they receive federal funding for services. For example, if a church gets money for a soup kitchen, would it have to remove or put a cloth over all crosses, pictures, etc., every time it gets ready to feed the hungry? (Everything that comes to mind is unfit for print, I'll pass for now.)
That sparked a lively debate among council members that largely dominated yesterday's two-hour teleconference. Melissa Rogers, director of Wake Forest's Center for Religion and Public Affairs, who is leading the group tasked with solving such church-state issues laid ouit three possibilities the council could recommend:
1. Making such religious icons not allowed for federally funded services.
2. Allowing it only if no other religious neutral rooms are available and covering up such icons is impratical.
3. Not requiring removal of such icons but encouraging religious orgs to be sensitive about the issue. (Sounds like a completely lose-lose situation for any group believing they should proclaim Christ "...in season, out of season...")
That led to a lengthy debate from which no clear consensus emerged. As the council's various taskforces finish up their reports, some thorny issues like this look like they'll require footnotes or majority/minority opinion sections (ala supreme court). (So the only ones who will like this crap will be lawyers. Figures.)
The other significant news that emerged from the teleconference yesterday was that Rogers has been chosen by the group to be its official chairwoman and to coordinate the finalizing of the final report as the various taskforces wrap up their work. (Since she authored the three guidelines listed above I'll just guess we can look forward to more nonsense of this sort.)
So what happens when some guy wearing a medal of the Immaculate Conception is working in a soup kitchen and that same medal falls out of his shirt into plain view of a homeless athiest with a chip on his shoulder for Christians in general?
Do we then see a lawsuit claiming (among other things) mental distress at the insensitivity shown? Will the Council for Seperation of Church & State then march on Christian soup kitchens in protest? Does the victim then go on Larry King to detail the agony of receiving chicken soup from a believer?
Naw! Never happen, right? Right?
Here's an idea. Forget about federal funding for any Christian charity. Period. Tell the government to take their money and stick it up their ass. One nickel at a time.

When anybody takes money from the government, they own you! Be it welfare, school funding, highway funds or whatever, you're owned!

I agree.
Any charity that accepts government money for aid programs does so at their own risk.
Why is the government donating to charity? Shouldn't they by lowering our taxes and we donate to the charities of our choosing?
Welcome to Democrat America. Everything else that comes to mind is also unfit to print.
Our former church has a "friendship" kitchen every Thursday night. I'm not sure if they actually receive $$ or just some left over cheese and stuff. Either way, I know they have a quite few hoops to jump through.
Just between you, me, and the fence post, I don't think they should accept anything. Period!
To be even more brutally honest, I don't think they should have the kitchen at all. I've helped out from time-to-time and it's the same people coming year after year. The other days of the week they hit the other free meal places. These people are not "poor" - they're lazy moochers and freeloaders with bad attitudes.
