"...And I turned 21 in prison doing lfe without parole..."

Found this at FOXNews.com via Fr. Z;

Six-year-old Zachary Christie was so excited to become a Cub Scout that he brought his camping utensil to school. The tool serves as a spoon, a fork and a knife, and Zachary wanted to use it at lunch.

What Zachary didn't know was that the gizmo violated his school's zero-tolerance policy on weapons. And now the Christina School District in Newark, Del., has suspended the first grader and ordered him to attend the district's reform school for 45 days. (Give. Me. A. Break.)

Zachary's parents insist their son did not intend to hurt anyone, and they are fighting to overturn the ruling. (He might have been a threat to the cafeteria's "mystery meat")

"Zachary wears a suit and tie some days to school by his own choice because he takes school so seriously," Zachary's mother, Debbie Christie, told the New York Times. "He is not some sort of threat to his classmates."

The school district, in a statement, said rules are rules and defended its decision to suspend the boy. (What a bunch of jerks. Has anyone reminded these fools they work for the city, therefore the parents of this child are their employers?)

"At this time, the Student Code of Conduct does not take into consideration a child's age in a Level three offense," the statement read. (It shouldn't, think outside the box and use discretion. Are these fools part of a Borg collecitve?)

"This is the first incident this year involving a student under the age of seven in possession of a dangerous instrument. Christina School District staff and the Christina Board of Education are constantly examining ways to improve policies regarding student discipline." (Noted. More like constantly examining ways to intimidate six year olds. Why don't they pick on someone their own size?)

At a meeting with the school disciplinary committee last week, Zachary's karate instructor and his mother’s fiancĂ© made the case for the boy's character.

And Zachary's mother has started a Web site to attract support for her son before a meeting of the school board on Tuesday. (I hope they prevail.)

For those who care to vent their ire, here's the link to the school district website; http://www.christina.k12.de.us/

In the meantime;

This is utterly ridiculous. As you say, can't these school officials think outside the box? What a bunch of robots, obviously a bunch of libs. This is actually a part of the Diocese I lived in while growing up. I lived on the Eastern Shore of MD, and this school district is around Wilmington, DE. Has common sense been forgotten? It certainly seems so. This was just a kid who was excited about his new toy. It was a simple mistake. This rule needs to be clarified.

Sent an E-mail off to the common sense lacking idiots at the school. Damn!

If school officials saw the blades our Boy Scout troop carries, they'd be contacting social services and trying to take the kids away. Funny thing is, no one ever gets hurt.

Was it a shank or just a sfork? If it is the latter, then people at the school have no judgment whatsoever. It can be argued that it wasn't even a dang weapon for crying out loud. I don't know why the word idiot comes to mind right now.

Teresa, it makes me wonder what lessons the children have picked up from this idiocy.

Cookie, great! A followup to the story states the suspension will likely be rescinded. I seriously doubt that would happen were it not for the power of the internet.

Arby, knives being carried by those homophobic Boy Scouts? Social Services is probably drawing up charges as we speak. The sad thing is, although thats intended as a joke it remains a possibility in this nutso world.

Rick, no mention as to what it was. But I seriously doubt it was designed for anything but eating. As you say, no judgement here at all. "Idiot" is being charitable.

VSO, those were my initial thoughts also.

OK, the school is obviously run by fools....but why did the parents let him take it to school in the first place?? I'd keep it home for fear of it getting lost/stolen myself.
