Teach your children well, no one else will.
Things like this make me go browsing the history book section of Barnes & Noble. I figure for the future education of my children I'd better stock up on REAL historical texts before they're all banned. Once that happens only the officially sanctioned versions will be allowed. I'll be teaching my kids on the sly, giving them information our school systems should but won't. This line from the article justifies my concerns;
"The AHA claims to define “ethical and professional standards” within the profession of historical studies."
With nut jobs like this in charge and running the show, how long will it be before our kids have even less of a knowledge of history then now?And what they've got now is nothing to write home about either. From talking to the War Department, her siblings and my 23 year old son I know History 101 isn't what it used to be. Seems it's very politically correct, very class conscious, very culturally diverse, hey it's a lot of things. But it isn't history as it should be. It's all being rewritten and watered down to the point where our kids have no sense of who we are as a people. No sense of why we as a nation came into existence.
And if you don't know who you are or where you come from how do you figure out where you should go?

History has always been written to conform to the politically correct standard of the day.
The Whiskey Rebellion of 1793 was probably the second most important domestic conflict, next to the Civil War. I never heard a thing about it in high school or college. I wonder why?
This is why I teach my children at home. If you want to learn real history, you have to read stuff that was written by historians before the 50's, at least. And, according to Oxford historian Belloc, a contempoary and friend of Chesterton, said that it's best to read the works of historians with opposing points of views than the mainstream, for exactly the reason reddog said, to avoid the conformance of thought.
It's hard to get these books in current print, but you might be able to find them on amazon or ebay.
A good historian will use what is called the historical critical method. That is he will look at several source works of a particular period to determine and verify what events actually happened.
