WASHINGTON - Sen. Barbara Boxer met with officials from a Muslim advocacy group, and both sides on Wednesday said they had resolved a controversy over Boxer rescinding an honor her office gave a member of the group.
But the California Democrat said she does not intend to give back the certificate honoring Basim Elkarra, executive director of the Sacramento chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. She also said the concerns prompting her to rescind his service award earlier this month haven't changed.
At the time, Boxer and her staff cited concerns about CAIR's positions on terrorist groups, contending that CAIR had refused to label Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist organizations. Boxer had been criticized on conservative Web sites for giving the award to Elkarra; she said she did not know her office had done so.
"I'm putting it all behind me, and we're moving ahead to work with the civil rights community to better relations among people of all faiths," Boxer said Wednesday during an interview, without elaborating.
CAIR officials met with Boxer and her staff on Tuesday.
"We have addressed the issues related to this unfortunate and unnecessary incident, and have agreed with Sen. Boxer that we should all move forward to build a nation in which people of all faiths work together to promote respect and tolerance," CAIR said in a statement.
CAIR-Los Angeles Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said the group condemns all acts of terrorism.
"We're not a government agency that classifies who's a terrorist and who's not," he said in an interview.
TRANSLATION; Boxer won't cave in but is downplaying this because she's a politician. CAIR lost and is trying to put some spin on it.
And I like the, "We're not a government agency...."disclaimer. Ah yup. Dodging that question about their support of HAMAS, etc. again.

Score one for Sen. Boxer. I give her credit for not caving in.
By the way, I think she married into Hillary Clinton's family or something like that.
Well we all make mistakes, won't hold that one against her.
