White House Chief of Staff Jacob Lew said Sunday the Obama administration has no plans to compromise further on its controversial mandate that religious organizations provide contraception services in their employee insurance plans.
After the administration's contraceptive initiative ignited a firestorm of opposition among Catholics and others who characterized the mandate as an infringement on religious freedom, the White House began backpedaling last week. On Friday, the president offered a compromise that would require insurance companies, not the religious institutions, to pick up the tab for the new coverage.
But that compromise was rejected later on Friday by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, who said the president's offer was "unacceptable."
Asked on Sunday if the White House intends to compromise further on the plan, Mr. Lew said, "No, this is our plan.
"We think it's a very good solution," Mr. Lew said in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union."
(End of story, my comments follow.)
It's a war against the Church. Now we'll see who remains faithful and who doesn't.

Worst case, they tax the church. That will include all churches, mosques, synagogues, temples. Don't think it will go there.
Church has a lot of faithful leaders e.g. Chaput, Burke et al. Less Liberals like OMalley. Mahoney is at the sidelines.
Obama will enlist the likes of Pelosi, Jenkins, Keehans to make his position like a valid Catholic one and convince the populace that he is just on the more Liberal interpretation of Christianity.
But the Church will stand firm, bolstered by the leaders of other faiths. Obama is done and over with. Thanks be to God. Our prayers are answered.
Rick, I hope you're right. I'll believe it when we've someone different sitting in the Oval Office on the 21st of January and that someone is reliably on the side of Christ and His followers.
