Mom Arrested for Washing Kid's Mouth With Soap

A Palm Bay, Florida woman and her boyfriend were arrested Monday for child abuse after the couple went old school to punish their 8-year-old daughter for swearing.

They washed her mouth out with soap.

We don't know about you, but we would petition President Obama and Congress to make it mandatory for every parent to carry a bar of Irish Spring in their back pockets with all the profanity kids use today.

Police claim Adriyanna Herdener and Wilfredo Rivera went too far by placing a bar of soap in the girl's mouth and letting it stay for 10 minutes. Herdener did not intervene in the discipline.

The girl eventually vomited and Rivera took her to the local hospital, where hospital staff called police.

No one wants a child to be hurt or inhumanely punished, but parents' discipline choices in this country have come down to calling Dr. Phil or hiding the joysticks to the Wii.

Next time your kid has a potty mouth, just give them some gum.

Good grief, as someone who spent his childhood well acquainted with the taste of Dial Soap I wonder why the hospital found it necessary to call the cops?

About 15 years ago I was speaking to a woman in the parking lot of her apartment complex. Her four year old came to the door puffing on a cigarette and "Mom" told him to get rid of it. His response was, "F*** you!"

When asked why she stood for that, the woman replied that if she disciplined him CPS would come down on her. At the time I thought it was pure BS, now I wonder.

The world has gone mad.

I also tend to use corporeal punishments because it is easy as opposed to talking it out. And I want to discipline my children. However, I am intimately familiar with St. John Bosco's Educational System (1888) that prohibits punishments of that sort. St. John Bosco says that "Punishment is anything that you intend it to be." So, simply snobbing or ignoring a boy hurts a lot when he did it because the boys loved him so much. Finally, the repressive system may stop a disorder but it does not make the kids better. How many kids are just waiting to turn 18 to get the heck out of the house. Instead his way is the "Preventive System" using religion, reason & kindness. I'll ellaborate more in Divine-Ripples soon. But it has produced more than 30 saints or at least in the process of canonization.

Hey,I see nothing wrong with giving the kid a lick of soap for profanity. But to make them hold it in their mouths for 10 minutes, resulting in vomiting? That is not exactly the paragon of parenting there. That isn't washing the kids mouth out, that is about control and takes it too far. At least that's my take.

Rick, I look forward to your expounding on the "Preventive System".

You're absolutely right about the corporal punishment by itself not modifying the behavior of a child. The parent also has to model the desired behavior, one question not asked in this article is "where did the little girl learn the words?" I wouldn't rule out the home enviornment, the old mindset of "do as I say and not as I do" is still alive and thriving.

All the butt whippings and soap washing in the world can't counter the bad examples set by a parent.

RobK, you might be right. I don't know. But to put it in another light, check out the movie "A Christmas Story" where Ralphie had to stand with a bar of soap in his mouth. How many folks laughed at that and how many thought of it as bad parenting being endorsed in the film?

I admit that most of my ire has been driven by a kneejerk type reflex to government involvement in family matters. Both your response and Rick's has me rethinking it.

So thanks for the food for thought on this one.

I liked that movie - and have seen it a few times, but don't remember the soap. I'll keep an eye out when it runs this year.

10minutes is too long. A simple wash and rinse is one thing...holding a bar of soap in your mouth for 10 minutes is an entirely other kettle of fish. Also, the soap and resulting vomiting TYPICALLY wouldn't prompt a CPS call....so I wonder what else there was to make the staff react....bruises??...most often what prompts a call is an inconsistent story. OH, and simply standing with a bar of soap wouldn't necessary trigger vomiting....unless someone had shoved it down her throat effectively gagging her and then held or taped or tied it in place....now, that'd not only cause vomiting..but would also rightly prompted said CPS call....

all's I'm saying...I wanna hear the REST of this story. (then again, maybe I don't)
